Liquid feeding: Meal feed vs pelleted feed
Abstract
Overall, the trial showed that liquid feed mixed on the basis of pelleted feed resulted in a better production economy (calculated on the basis of the achieved production results and with the same feed price in both groups) than liquid feed mixed on the basis of meal feed. The pigs given pelleted feed as liquid feed had a significantly higher productivity (7%) than the pigs given liquid feed based on meal feed. This difference in productivity was caused by a higher feed intake and daily gain among the pigs given pelleted feed. The lower feed intake among the pigs given meal feed as liquid feed was probably due to, among others, a lower content of FUp per kg compared with the group given liquid feed mixed on the basis of pelleted feed. The content of starch measured in the manure was significantly higher in the group given liquid feed based on meal feed. Numerically, however, the difference was far smaller than seen in previous trials comparing meal feed and pelleted feed fed as dry feed. Liquid feed based on meal feed resulted in fewer and less serious gastric lesions in the white part of the stomach compared with liquid feed based on pelleted feed. Both groups had a relatively low average score of gastric lesions (few/mild lesions). |
