Complete diets mixed with a part of non-heat-treated grain: effect on Salmonella prevalence in finishers
Abstract
The test comprised 14 test herds and 20 control herds that were all selected on the basis of a Salmonella problem. There was a significant drop in the number of Salmonella positive meat juice samples when using feed in which part of the grain had not been heat-treated nor pelleted. Not all test herds had reached level 1 after the test period of six months, which indicates that Salmonella problems may not always be solved via feed changes alone. From this set of data it was not possible to establish whether there was any influence of an increasing content of non-heat-treated grain. Nor was it possible to establish whether there was any difference in the effect on Salmonella prevalence depending on whether it was wheat or barley that had been excluded from heat-treatment and pelleting. |
