Betaine in organically composed feed for finishers

Abstract
The product “Betafin” containing betaine was tested in organically composed feed for finishers.

Two test diets were compared with each other and with a traditional control diet. None of the diets contained antibiotic growth promoters.

The test comprised the following treatments:

·

Traditional control feed

·

Organically composed feed

·

Organically composed feed + 1.25 kg/tonne Betafin from Danisco Cultor

All diets were tested for finishers in the weight interval 31-100 kg in one herd. The test comprised 119 pigs in each group divided into 11 blocks (pens), with 10-11 pigs per pen.

No significant difference could be proven in the number of disease treatments or slaughterloss between the groups.

Production value was calculated from the production results and is stated as gross margin per place unit per year using the same price for all diets.

The test showed that the organically composed diets yielded a lower production value than control. The poorer production results might primarily have been caused by the different range of ingredients used. The organic diets, for example, contained both rye and sunflower meal – both can potentially reduce production results in finishers. Also the analysed energy content of these organic feeds (1.02 and 1.04 FUp/kg) was slightly lower than the control feed (1.05 FUp/kg).

The test also showed that addition of the product Betafin to the organic feed did not affect the production value compared to the same feed without betaine. Thus no improvement in production results could be proven by adding Betafin to a regular organic feed for finishers.
