Danish Pig Production

Danish Pig Production was set up by three basic organisations:

• Danish Bacon & Meat Council
• Danish Agriculture
• Association of Danish Pig Producers

In addition to representatives from these organisations, Danish Pig Production consists of pig producers elected at the annual general meeting, and members elected by local pig production committees.

Danish Pig Production concentrates on development and information within Danish pig farmers. The many and varied activities have some overall objectives:

Improved productivity

It is vital that productivity in Danish pig production is fully on a par with that of our competitors and preferably much better.

Reduced costs

The products used in pig production, such as housing construction, feedstuffs, vaccines, etc., must be continuously improved and made cheaper. Extensive testing ensures producers an impartial basis on which to make their decisions, so that they can to a great extent avoid bad investments.

Sales possibilities and quality assurance

The high quality level of Danish pork is based on the continuing work carried out to improve the pigs supplied, both as regards breeding, meat quality and health, work also including the environment and welfare.

The activities are administratively placed in a number of departments of varying affiliations with The Federation of Danish Pig Producers and Slaughterhouses and the Danish Agricultural Advisory Centre, but report on specialist matters to Danish Pig Production and its Director.

Financing

Danish Pig Production has a total net expenditure of DKK 88.5m for the financial year of 2006/2007.

Ours work is mainly financed through the Pig Levy Fund, the Per Mille Levy Fund, subsidies from the basic organisations and public funds. Additionally, own earnings constitute a substantial amount, and efforts are being made to increase this amount by user payment for concrete services and by operational optimisation of experimental stations.

In addition to the above activities, Danish Pig Production is in charge of:

• The Fund to combat new pig diseases rendering it possible to spend funds to combat new production diseases or mere suspicion thereof.

Ours most important function of is the development of the scientific basis for Danish pig farmers. This is done by ranking resources in an order of priorities in the main areas of breeding, nutrition, reproduction, housing, production systems, health, information, and advisory services. Before implementation of new projects, their utility value is thoroughly discussed.
